The IRI Seasonal Climate Prediction System and the 1997/98 El Niño Event

چکیده
The International Research Institute for Climate Prediction (IRI) was formed in late 1996 with the aim of fostering the improvement, production, and use of global forecasts of seasonal to interannual climate variability for the explicit benefit of society. The development of the 1997/98 El Niño provided an ideal impetus to the IRI Experimental Forecast Division (IRI EFD) to generate seasonal climate forecasts on an operational basis. In the production of these forecasts an extensive suite of forecasting tools has been developed, and these are described in this paper. An argument is made for the need for a multimodel ensemble approach and for extensive validation of each model’s ability to simulate interannual climate variability accurately. The need for global sea surface temperature forecasts is demonstrated. Forecasts of precipitation and air temperature are presented in the form of “net assessments,” following the format adopted by the regional consensus forums. During the 1997/98 El Niño, the skill of the net assessments was greater than chance, except over Europe, and in most cases was an improvement over a forecast of persistence of the latest month’s climate anomaly. *International Research Institute for Climate Prediction, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California, San Diego, La Jolla, California. Impacts of 1997–98 El Niño– Generated Weather in the United States
The societal, economic, and environmental impacts of weather events and climate conditions in the United States normally vary spatially across the nation, and for any given period such as a season or year, the impacts reveal a mix of regional winners and losers. This was certainly true with the impacts resulting from El Niño-generated weather during 1997–98. The early official predictions of mo...

As in the observed record, the termination of El Niño in the coupled IPCC-AR4 climate models involves meridional processes tied to the seasonal cycle. These meridional processes both precondition the termination of El Niño events in general and lead to a peculiar termination of extreme El Niño events (such as those of 1982–83 and 1997–98), in which the eastern equatorial Pacific warm sea surfac...
متن کاملPredictive Skill of Statistical and Dynamical Climate Models in SST Forecasts during the 1997–98 El Niño Episode and the 1998 La Niña Onset
In the last decade and a half, our improved ability to forecast El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) warm and cold events (El Niño and La Niña, respectively) at longer lead times can be attributed to several factors. Foremost among these are our increasingly improved data observing and analysis/assimilation systems, higher computer speed and storage capacity, and increased understanding of the t...
متن کاملThe Termination of the 1997–98 El Niño. Part II: Mechanisms of Atmospheric Change
The mechanisms that drove zonal wind stress ( ) changes in the near-equatorial Pacific at the end of the extreme 1997–98 El Niño event are explored using a global atmospheric general circulation model. The analysis focuses on three features of the x evolution between October 1997 and May 1998 that were fundamental in driving the oceanic changes at the end of this El Niño event: (i) the southwar...
متن کاملSeasonal climate summary southern hemisphere (spring 2002): the El Niño reaches maturity and dry conditions dominate Australia
The El Niño – Southern Oscillation (ENSO) maintained its warm state through the austral spring of 2002, however the Southern Oscillation Index (SOI) remained only weakly negative, with values of –7.6, –7.4 and –6.0 for September, October and November respectively. This resulted in a seasonal mean SOI of –7.0, an increase of 1.5 since the winter season (Jones 2003). The SOI for spring (arguably)...
